Just short of a year ago, I
purchased a well-worn 1993 Saab 900 Turbo Convertible. The car was my remedy to
the monotony of leasing a perfectly capable 2013 Volkswagen GTI, disguised to
my wife as a sound financial decision. She got smart, hence why I’m writing
this – actually, we both got smart.
HOW TO WALK AWAY FROM A LEASE EARLY
If you’ve ever leased a car,
you most likely know the benefits and disadvantages of the process: you get a
more expensive, highly optioned car for a lower monthly payment than you would
traditionally financing. On the flip side, lease payments are rent payments:
you’re paying for your use of the vehicle. But what happens when you want out?
WHY CAR SHOWS DON'T ATTRACT "THE YOUTHS" AND HOW TO FIX IT
If you hang around enough car shows, concours, and collector car events, you'll hear a not-so-subtle tinge of disappointment from the grey-haired population concerning the next generation of car enthusiasts, or lack thereof. As the baby boomers age and enter the sunset years of their lives, it's becoming more and more difficult for them to understand and adjust to the future of automotive enthusiasm. For those who focus on the blue-chip market, or investment grade vehicles, their concern is different: they have no interest in losing money on their stock. But for those who are genuinely concerned about the future of the community: I've got some advice to help.
THIS ALPINA IS A FAMILY AFFAIR
In August of 2014, Scott Glace found his 1985 Alpina C1 2.3 sitting in a field outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The car was dirty and mechanically questionable. However, all the ingredients of a truly special car remained -- so he bought it. The previous owner, George Mitchell, is an avid BMW collector and enthusiast. Mitchell imported the car from Japan back in 2013, however the C1 got lost in the shuffle of a large collection and after he decided it wasn’t worth his time, the car was relegated to the field outside of his warehouse.
SHORT DRIVE: 2015 CAYMAN GTS
Last month, Porsche was kind enough to let me sample the 2015 Cayman GTS during the Pinehurst Councours d’Elegance weekend, hosted in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Sure enough, it was everything that’s been promised.
WE WISH EVERY GULLWING LOOKED LIKE THIS
There is no shortage of overly-restored trailer queens in the world of blue-chip collector cars. That's why Jay Leno's 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing is one of the best ones we've ever seen.
THESE ARE THE CARS OUR MOTHERS DROVE
Let’s face it, we wouldn’t be here without the loving support of our mothers and for that, we need to say thank you this Mother’s Day. However, before we became reasonable and appreciative adults, our moms took us to soccer practice, basketball try-outs, or in my case, golf lessons (the sad truth). As members of the car counter-culture, even as kids our modes of transportation were important. So here are the best mom-mobiles from the ‘90s and their associated stereotypes.
WHO ORDERED THE P1?
We’re spending the weekend in Pinehurst, North Carolina for the third annual Pinehurst Concours d’Elegance. This is how our day started.
PENNIES ON THE DOLLAR: THIS ONE OWNER ZR-1 HAS OVER A 100K MILES
Do you ever get inspired to search for a specific car for sale?
I was doing just that when I entered the search terms "Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1" into eBay this evening. Not to anyone's surprise, I found a seemingly endless amount of ZR-1s that have been driven to car cruises, high school reunions, and retirement picnics -- a total of 118 miles. Then I came across this one owner 108,000 mile 2009 C6 ZR-1. I was in awe.
THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE SWEDISH
It's been 3 months since I purchased my 1993 Saab 900 Turbo Convertible and, at the risk of spontaneous combustion, it has been a solid purchase.
If you don't remember, I was driving a 2013 Volkswagen GTI until I decided I wanted a lighter wallet, more headaches, and a bit of intrigue in my daily commute — something the GTI just wasn't doing for me. So, I sold the leased VW to Carmax (Thanks Doug!) and began trolling Craigslist.
