After reading Jack Baruth's recent take on sports cars --"When Did Two-Seat Sports Cars Stop Being Manly?"-- my mind began racing with thoughts of windblown hair and no room for luggage. The romance of convertibles is undeniable, but the reality is this: its all fun and games until you turn to your passenger and its another guy wearing Ray-Bans. All kidding aside, if you can keep your passenger seat occupied by a beautiful woman, your offspring, or a GoPro, it doesn't get much better than the modern-day James Dean. Check out this 2012 Boxster Spyder on Ebay Motors for a cool $63,500 (BIN).
For relatively cheap thrills, the Boxster offers all the purpose of a Porsche for a fraction of the price--second generation Boxsters (2005-2012) have fallen to the $18-$30K range, depending on year and trim level, and will continue to depreciate. However, the Boxster Spyder offers a different experience--with an umbrella for
a top, seats pulled from the GT3, and increased power and handling--the Spyder is a modern-day 550.
A Porsche with a purpose is something we have come to love in the 911 GT3 and although fundamentally different, both the GT3 and Spyder are the results of this question: How can we make the purest form of the existing design? The Spyder is inspired by feeling, where the GT3 is a precision instrument--both offer unique advantages.
This particular Spyder has been owned by a PCA member who admits his reluctant sale to keep the peace at home and justify the completion of a 993 project, both of which are respectable excuses. As stated in the advertisement, this is the last of the Boxsters to sport hydraulic steering (will this be an ingredient in future collectability?) and has a dealer-installed short-shift kit and sports exhaust--all of which are pluses. Sports seats, nylon door pulls, and the subtle yellow top-center indicator on the steering wheel round out the no-frills interior. If you are looking for a Porsche with purpose, this Spyder is a great buy.
